Rush Athletic FC - Forty Years into Their Journey in 2010

Rush Athletic FC in 2010 is celebrating forty years of providing an outlet for soccer players both male and female of all ages in this North County Dublin seaside town.

They were founded in 1970 by a group of men who had one aim in mind, to provide boys and girls from the area with an opportunity to play soccer.

They began with one schoolboy team in 1970, and followed this a year later with their first senior team.

Currently, there are 17 teams at the club, 14 schoolboy/schoolgirl teams,  an U10 girls team and an U18’s girls team, and one senior team. These teams do battle each week in the NDSL, MGL and the Leinster  Senior League. There is also a weekly football Academy for 5,6 and 7 year olds.

They were founded in 1970 by a group of men who had one aim in mind, to provide boys and girls from the area with an opportunity to play soccer.

They began with one schoolboy team in 1970, and followed this a year later with their first senior team.

Currently, there are 22 teams at the club, nine schoolboy teams from U7 to U10, eight full 11 a side schoolboy teams from U11 to U18, an U15’s girls team, a senior women’s team, an over 35’s team and two senior teams. These teams do battle each week in the NDSL, Leinster  Senior League and the Amateur League. There is also a weekly football nursery for 5 and 6 year olds.

In the 98/99 season, Rush Athletic Senior team achieved a unique clean sweep, they won the LSL Premier Saturday Division, the Wally Winn Cup, the Lummy O’Reilly Cup and the Austin Mullen Cup. They were deservedly named ‘Club of the Year’ in the Leinster Senior League.

The club has a new clubhouse opened in 2006 by the now Minister of Justice Dermot Ahern. The building houses a club shop which sells official Rush Athletic kits etc, a small indoor training facility, dressing rooms, a meeting room and a kitchen.

They have two full size pitches and a grass floodlit training pitch, every inch of which is used to capacity throughout the season. With 22 teams vying for training time, these facilities are always busy, with some of the younger teams using the indoor pitch.

It is club policy to ensure that an FAI accredited coach is working with every team, and to achieve this, all new coaches are encouraged to take up the FAI Kickstart Training Programme. Once level 1 is attained, coaches are then encouraged and supported to move up through the FAI coaching levels to bolster up the wealth of experience at the club’s disposal. This visionary policy firms up for the future an already rock solid foundation from which the future of soccer in Rush can continue to spring forward.

Rush Athletic will have a 40th Anniversary Ball this Year 2010, and along with their many achievements in that time, they will especially pay homage and thanks to their ten Founding Members, (named below) for the great service they did the game of soccer and the town and people of Rush.

Victor Loughman, James Redmond, Harry White, Anthony Butterly, Sean McBride, Alan Jones, Richard Coscoran, Gert Van Westernen, Charlie Armstrong(current chairman) and Johnny Callaghan.
